PLN and Experts Describe Critical Role of Pharmacist in Inpatient Continuum of Care
Millstone Township, NJ (October 3, 2011) — Pharmacy Learning Network (PLN®), a division of North American Center for Continuing Medical Education (NACCME) and the leader in live, local learning for hospital-based pharmacists, continues its advocacy of continuing education (CE) for health system pharmacists through a featured article in the CE industry’s leading magazine and through a webinar featuring a panel of CE industry experts.
As the article states, “Gone are the days when health-system pharmacists just verified doctors’ medication orders and correctly dispensed them from the confines of the hospital basement… This new role gives HSPs more responsibility to improve patient care and outcomes, while also making evidence-based pharmacotherapy more cost-effective.”
The published article, penned Randolph V. Fugit, PharmD, BCPS, Internal Medicine Clinical Specialist at the Denver VA Medical Center and Clinical Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy Practice at the U of CO Health Sciences Center; Stephen M. Chavez, Senior Director Of Educational Services for PLN; and Kristin Ciszeski, PLN’s Senior Director Of Educational Programming, describes the evolving role of pharmacists and the impact they have in the hospital setting.
It can be read in its entirety here.
The industry expert webinar panel features Ro Brual, RPH from the Lilly Grant Office at Eli Lilly and Co., Julie Goslee Owens, PharmD, Senior Director, Independent Medical Education at sanofi, U.S., Randolph V. Fugit, PharmD, BCPS mentioned previously, and Thomas Lombardi, PharmD, FASHP, Supervisor of Clinical Pharmacy Services at St. Peter's Hospital and Senior Adjunct Faculty at Albany College of Pharmacy.

“As the impatient landscape shifts, there’s a groundswell of educational needs coming from our hospital pharmacy learners,” comments Mr. Chavez. “We think it’s our responsibility to raise the alarm that there needs to be more continuing education dedicated to the needs of these important providers.”
